Multi-purpose Terminals in Turkey

Large multi-purpose port on the Turkish coast of the Black Sea.

For some time, the Turkish government has been investigating the potential of constructing a large multi-purpose port on the Turkish coast of the Black Sea. Previous studies have indicated the suitability of the central section of the Turkish Black Sea coastline and in December 2008, NIRAS was awarded the contract to plan and study the new facility and subsequently to prepare detailed design and tender documents for this important port project in Turkey.

It was estimated that the port would handle up to 21million tonnes of cargo annually, a mix of containers, general cargo and dry bulk.

Due to the poor soil conditions and seismicity in the area, a detailed analysis of the liquefaction potential was required. In addition, earthquake calculations had to be performed for the various port structures in order to ensure that the design would comply with both Eurocode 8: Design of structures for earthquake resistance and equivalent Turkish code of practice. The design was optimised using advanced calculations and the final result was a robust breakwater design that complied with the codes.

This was a wide-ranging project, beginning with initial traffic forecasting and comprising operational analyses, conceptual design, detailed design and tender documents.
