NIRAS presents at European offshore power grid workshop

Published: 18-01-2016

NIRAS had representatives from both the Cambridge office in the UK (David Bloxsom) and the Aarhus office in Denmark (Pernille Holm Skyt), presenting at the Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) workshop on offshore grid infrastructure in Brussels, December 2015.

The aim of the expert workshop was to try and understand how to optimally utilise the infrastructure that is to be built in the near future, looking at knowledge gaps in the environmental impacts of subsea cables, cross border planning and data acquisition.

NIRAS presented twice over the course of the day, providing an overview of the issues surrounding the environmental impacts of subsea cables and introducing the afternoons working session by presenting preliminary findings from a RGI commissioned industry research project.

The industry research project produced recommendations for the industry from the collation of expert opinions and insight on the current understanding of the environmental interactions of subsea cables, what the major issues around the permitting of subsea cables are and what the future priorities of the industry should be.

The workshop was an extremely successful day with useful discussions and knowledge sharing opportunities. It was an excellent opportunity to build upon NIRAS’ recent success in the offshore power grid sector and to share our expertise.
