Published: 20-04-2016

NIRAS' graduate program in Belgrade will give 12 Young Europeans a fast track to an international career in development aid.

For the second year in a row, NIRAS is seeking applications for a two-year graduate program, which will introduce the candidates to the multifaceted world of development aid.

NIRAS Young Professional Academy, as the program has been named, brings together the 12 best candidates from across the EU in NIRAS' Belgrade office. Here, they will learn the art of writing the winning tender, project management and how to communicate across cultures. All in a stimulating combination of theoretical modules and intensive practical training.

During the program, the candidates are posted on specific projects or local offices, typically in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Eastern Europe, and he or she will also be stationed in one of NIRAS' European offices.

The idea of a graduate program focusing on development aid dates back to 2012, when Director for NIRAS International Consulting Tor Lundström discussed recruitment challenges with NIRAS' International Director Markus Davelid.

Ensures talent in the industry

"As the largest Scandinavian player in the development aid market, it is quite natural that NIRAS is helping to ensure the next generation of employees in the industry. The graduate program is contributing to making us attractive for young talents who dream of an international career, "said Tor Lundström from the NIRAS office in Vantaa, Finland.

Tor Lundström does not hesitate to denote NIRAS Young Professional Academy as a fast track to a career in development aid.

"When the two years are up, the graduates are already well into their careers. The best will be offered a job in NIRAS, but their unique combination of theory and practice vouch for them all - they will be sought after in the market," he says.

Do you have what it takes?

To be considered for NIRAS Young Professional Academy, the candidate must have a relevant degree for the technical areas we work in, primarily: Agriculture, water/waste water, energy, monitoring & evaluation, fund management . He or she must also have experience with development aid, either as an employee or intern, in a donor organization, NGO, Foreign ministry or the like. This ensures a strong team of candidates, who will meet each other in Belgrade during fall 2016.

"The employees in our Serbian office are all relatively young, and Belgrade is a good city for young people to live in. We help to provide housing, and we make sure to create a strong team spirit among candidates. When they complete the program, they have a fantastic European network to draw on," says Tor Lundström.
