2013 record year for NIRAS

Focus on efficiency and costs boost bottom line for NIRAS, which is targeting Scandinavia and growth markets in Africa

With an EBITA of DKK 48 million, NIRAS, Denmark’s third-largest consulting engineering company, ended 2013 with a new record in earnings, while revenue was on par with 2012.

“This throws our financial performance into relief. Our results increased by nearly 40%, while our revenue remained the same. This indicates that we are doing a much better job managing our resources and ensuring the profitability of our projects,” says NIRAS CEO Carsten Toft Boesen.

Solid results

NIRAS has offices in more than 20 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, and projects in more than 50 countries. While the 2013 financial results were influenced by poor results in Sweden and, especially, Poland, the other markets performed to satisfaction in 2013, emphasises Carsten Toft Boesen.

“Both geographically and across business areas, the majority of our business areas have performed well financially in Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany and the UK,” says NIRAS’ CEO.

Focus on Scandinavia

Over the next few years, NIRAS will make major investments in Scandinavia. Sweden is already the largest market after Denmark, and NIRAS is aiming for a leading role when more than 500 Norwegian oil-billions are to be invested in better roads, railways, bridges and ports in coming years.

NIRAS is one of the major European players in the market for development aid, with many years’ experience from projects and offices in developing countries. Thus, NIRAS has the presence as well as the necessary insights into culture, language and special conditions for doing business in many countries in Africa and Asia.

Acquisition of British company

Ports and the offshore sector are other areas where NIRAS holds a strong position in both Europe and Africa. This position was further fortified in 2013 with the acquisition of British engineering consultancy Peter Fraenkel & Partners in July 2013.

“Many developing countries have growth rates that make them attractive markets. In areas such as port construction and water, we have the strong specialist competencies that are in demand in these countries. Part of our strategy is to use our presence and our experience to promote several of our strong business areas in Africa,” says Carsten Toft Boesen.
