NIRAS involved in Standford Hill Wind Park

A new grand wind energy park is now opened on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. NIRAS completed the impact assessments

Ian Ellis, Prinicipal Ecologist at NIRAS Consulting recently attended the commissioning event at Standford Hill Wind Energy Development on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent.
Standford Hill was formerly opened by Gordon Henderson MP and represents the first operational installation for Partnerships for Renewables, a business set up by the Carbon Trust in 2007 to develop, construct and operate renewable energy projects, primarily on public sector land.

The two-turbine, 4.6MW development is the result of a collaboration with the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and the Sheppey Prisons Cluster. The development is in close proximity to The Swale Special Protection Area (SPA), which is internationally significant for wintering waders and waterfowl in addition to breeding species such as marsh harrier. In particular, directly adjacent to Standford Hill lies Great Bells Farm, where as part of the Environment Agency’s Regional Habitat Creation Programme (RHCP) land has been acquired. This is designed to deliver a proportion of the RHCP freshwater component and management of the site will be focussed on supporting interest features cited for The Swale Special Protection Area (SPA).

Ian Ellis successfully completed both the ornithological and ecological impact assessments of the development in addition to a Habitats Regulations Assessment Report. Detailed consultation and establishment of a steering group with the Environment Agency and Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has led to not only the successful approval of the development application but on-going collaboration to provide monitoring data on the potential impacts of the turbines on SPA qualifying features.
NIRAS Consulting ecologists have direct experience 40+ onshore wind developments and specialise in effective management of baseline surveys, preparation of ES chapters and HRA reports and provision of strategic advice through both application and post-consents phases.
