Energy Supply

NIRAS has the expertise to cover all stages of the project lifecycle

An efficient and flexible energy infrastructure for production and transmission of energy are important elements in the UK’s future energy supply. In this way, optimisation of the energy, and supplies of low carbon and renewable energy at affordable prices are secured.

The British government aims to increase the number of households connected to district heating networks through the co-production of electricity and heat. This also then requires efficient district heating systems and intelligent electrical systems which together reduce the amount of heat wasted. These increases in efficiency are especially important given the desire to integrate the increasing renewable energy in the future energy supply mix.

Gas production is also to be adjusted in line with the decreasing natural gas supplies from the North Sea, and the introduction of biogas in the natural gas distribution system opens up new opportunities for the existing gas infrastructure.

Both electricity network and gas grid changes will need to be consistent with new building-level solutions, as well as with future local heat networks deployment and thermal storage provision where these solutions would be cost effective.
